ABSTRACT:

Effect of estradiol administration on body weight changes and some testicular parameters were investigated in an experiment with fifteen pre-pubertal rabbit bucks (and two female rabbits) all of the New Zealand / Chinchilla Crossbreed, having average weight of 1.18kg. The two female rabbit were used as teasers in checking Libido scores and for semen collection.

Animals were randomly allotted to three treatment groups, each treatment consisting of five pre-pubertal rabbit bucks. Varied doses of estradiol were administered for four (4) weeks. Estradiol was administered orally at Omg (T1), 0.625mg (T2) and 1.25mg (T3) to each treatment daily for four weeks. Body weight was significantly (P <0.05) higher in bucks administered 1.25mg at 7 days (1.49kg) and 28 days (1.90kg) than those on 0mg and 0.625mg estradiol administration. Significant differences (P<0.05) were observed on the scrotal linear measurement and circumference, where bucks on 0.625mg and 1.25mg estradiol had higher values. Sperm concentration and active motility were significantly (P<0.05) higher in bucks receiving 1.25mg of estradiol than those on 0mg and 0.625mg. Reaction time was significantly (P<0.05) higher in bucks receiving 1.25mg (5.0 seconds) after 28 days than those on 0mg and 0.625mg.

Epididymal length and weight was significantly (p<0.05) higher in bucks receiving 1.25mg estradiol compared to 0mg and 0.625mg. In conclusion, the exogenous estradiol influenced the body weight, sperm concentration and brought about early attainment of puberty in pre-pubertal rabbit bucks.
