Dr. Arun Goyal did M.Sc. in Chemistry and M.Tech. in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from India’s world ranking Institutes IIT Delhi and then PhD from IIT Kanpur, India in1995. He spent over 7 years abroad. And after PhD he went to University College Dublin, Ireland to work with Prof Paul C. Engel, the founder Director of Krebs Institute of Biomolecular Research at Sheffield University, UK. Later he worked at Ohio State University, USA on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and then at Department of Biological Sciences, Wayne State University, Detroit USA. He then went to Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lisbon, Portugal and obtained Portuguese Government Scholarship and worked with Prof. Carlos Fontes on molecular and structural biology of carbohydrate enzymes.
Based on his brilliant and outstanding credentials he was selected in absentia as Visiting Associate Professor at Department of Biotechnology, IIT Guwahati and that he joined in August 2003 and at present continuing as Associate Professor. He received 7 prestigious scholarships including 4 overseas. He was bestowed on the prestigious national recognition of Fellow of Association of Microbiologists of India (FAMI) in 2006 at a quite young age. The recognition of FAMI-2006 was conferred upon for his outstanding contributions to the Science and Profession of Microbiology at national and international level. He also received Prof. J.V. Bhat Award for best paper published in Indian Journal of Microbiology (a Springer publication). He is serving as an editor for Indian Journal of Microbiology, a publication of Springer. He is associated with 10 scientific societies, 6 national and international journals. He is serving as the reviewer of Bioresource Technology (Elsevier), Journal of Basic Microbiology (Wiley) and Journal of Food Biochemistry, Blackwell).
He is working on production and optimization, cloning, purification characterization and structural biology of natural and recombinant carbohydrate enzymes from microbial sources. The 3-Dimensinoal crystal structures of Lichenase, Acetyl xylan esterase and a Carbohydrate Binding Module from Clostridium thermocellum were determined. He has been working on genetic control of cellulase and xylanase expression from Pseudomonas fluorescens and Celvibrio mixtus. He hascloned and expressed a rare regulatory protein involved in DNA binding and controlling cellulase gene expression. His research also includes production, purification and functional analysis of glucansucrases from bacteria Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-640 and Leuconostoc dextranicumNRRL B-1146. The conditions for maximum secretion of enzyme have been accomplished using statistical methods. A simple and single step method for purification of enzyme by fractionation and chromatographic methods was established. Identification of dextransucrase by activity staining and molecular size analysis by HPLC and SDS-PAGE are being done. The linkage pattern analysis of dextran produced by enzyme carried out using FTIR, 1H & 13C NMR, 2-D NMR and GC-MS techniques.
He has 100 publications including conference papers to his credit. In the last 16 years he has performed research in the areas of applied microbiology, biochemistry, enzymology, molecular biology and structural biology. In short span of time of less than 5 years at IIT Guwahati he published 75 papers including conference papers. His major accomplishments are on microbial carbohydrate active enzymes.
