Prof. Arun Kumar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Reproduction, Development and Genetics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1987 from the Center of Advanced Study in Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He has received his postdoctoral training in the area of genetics and human genetics in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, USA; Division of Neurology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, USA; andCenter for Human Genetics, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA. He is a Corresponding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.

His areas of research interest include genomic imprinting (epigenetics), genomics of male infertility, gene-expression profiling, protein-protein interactions, cellular and molecular basis of human cancers (oral cancer, retinoblastoma and meibomian cell carcinoma) with the aim of finding diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets, and mapping and characterization of genes causing human genetic disorders such as tuberous sclerosis complex, primary microcephaly, retinitis pigmentosa, corneal dystrophies, glaucoma, microspherophakia etc.
He is a member of the editorial board of the journal 'Recent Patents on DNA & Gene Sequences'. He is also a member of the Reviewer Board of the 'Journal of Pediatric Neurology'.
