Dr. A.S. Bawa has been working as Director, Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysore since 14th Dec 2000. He graduated in Agriculture with Food Science and Technology as electives from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 1972 and was awarded ‘Certificate of Honour’. Subsequently he passed his M.Sc. Food Technology with distinction from Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore in 1974 and started his career at PAU, Ludhiana as Asst. Professor in January 1975. He was awarded Bulgarian Govt. as well as Canadian Commonwealth scholarships for higher studies abroad in 1978. Out of the two he chose the Canadian Commonwealth Fellowship and proceeded to the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada for higher studies in September 1978. He completed M.Sc. Meat Science and Ph.D. Food Science from the University of Guelph, Canada in 1983 and returned to India. On return he joined CFTRI, Mysore as Scientist ‘C’ in September 1983. He left CFTRI in April 1985 and joined back at PAU, Ludhiana as Scientist, Food Technology from where he proceeded to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar to establish a new Department of Food Science and Technology in September 1993. He continued to be Professor, Department of Food Science and Technology with assignments as Professor and Head, Food Technology (6 Jun 1994 to 5 Jun 1997) and Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences (6 Jun 1996 to 5 May 1998) in between, till joining at DFRL, Mysore.

He was awarded N.N. Mohan Memorial Award for Best Research Paper for Industrial Importance by All India Food Preservers’ Association, New Delhi in 1986 & 1999 and M/s Gardner’s Award for Best Research Paper by AFST (I), Mysore in 1989.He was awarded Fellow Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) for the year 2001.He has been awarded President's "Special Award" 2002 by the All India Food Processors Association for his contributions to Food Processing Industry.The Prime Minister presented DRDO Award for "Performance Excellence" carrying citation and a cash prize of Ten Lakh Rupees for the year 2004 on Technology Day.A Second prize, "Raksha Khadya Vigyan Patrika" for the year 2003-04 was presented by the Defence Minister.He has more than hundred publications and one hundred and fifty presentations in National and International journals, six book reviews, two book chapters and two articles in snack foods, Encyclopaedia in Food Science, Technology and Nutrition published by Academic Press, UK to his credit.Contributed two chapters (i) Jam Making Technology and (ii) Additives in Fruits and Vegetables preservation in the book "Handbook of Fruits and Fruit processing" by Blackwell publishers.

He is a Life Member of AFST(I), Mysore, as well as Punjab Academy of Sciences.He has also been Vice President, AFST(I) Ludhiana Chapter (1988-90) and Chapters (North) AFST(I), Mysore (1989-90), President, AFST(I), Amritsar Chapter (1998-2000).He was the President of AFST(I) in the year 2004 and is the Chairman of AAFOSTI.He has been a Paper Setter/Examiner, Member, Board of Studies for various Universities/Institutes to conduct examinations as well as evaluation of M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis.He has guided a number ofM.Sc.,M.Tech. and Ph.D. candidates and is presently guiding 8 Ph.D. candidates.He has attended many National and International Conferences in Food Science and Technology; presented poster as well as invited papers and chaired the sessions.He is a member of the Editorial Board for “Journal of Food Science and Technology” as well as Advisory Boards of “Indian Food Industry”, AFST(I), Mysore and ‘Natural Products Radiance’, a CSIR publication.He is Chairman of "Drinks and Carbonated Beverages Sectional Committee" FADC14 of BIS.He is a regular referee for many National and International Journals and member of many National Committees in the field of Food Science & Technology. He is a member of the Editorial Board for American Journal of Food Technology - 2007.He is a Chairman of Food Additives and Contaminants Sub-Committee of CCFS.He is a member of the Editorial Board of the "Indian Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics" of Avinashilingam University for Women.

He has been instrumental to develop/establish the departments of Food Sci. & Tech. at PAU, Ludhiana and GNDU, Amritsar.Under his guidance a number of technologies for viz. Self Contained, Self Heating System, Structured Fruits, Shelf Stable Ready To Eat meat products, Neera Preservation, Meat Quality Testing Kits etc. have been developed and the technologies for Ready-to-Eat Retort Pouch processed foods, Tender Coconut Water Preservation, Freeze Drying of Fruit juices as well as Hurdle Technology, Preservation of Fruits developed by DFRL have been transferred to many entrepreneurs.
