The American Academy of Neurology(AAN) has named Teshamae Monteith, MD, of San Francisco and Mamta Bhushan Singh, MBBS, MD, DM, of New Delhi, India, as the AAN Donald M. Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum Co-Advocates of the Year. The Council of the Indian Institute of Metals, the premier Body of Metallurgists in India and the only Body recognized by the Government in this area, at its meeting held in Kolkata on July 30, 2009 has decided to elect Prof K A Padmanabhan as a Honorary Member of the Institute in view of his “distinguished services and contributions to the Metallurgical Profession, Education, Research and to the Indian Institute of Metals”. The honour will be conferred on him on November 14, 2009 during the Inaugural function of the 47th National Metallurgists Day Celebrations, 63rd Annual Technical Meeting, International Symposium on ‘Emerging Challenges for Metals and Materials: Engineering & Technology’” at the “Science City Auditorium”, Science City Complex, Kolkata. Honorary Membership is the highest honor of the Indian Institute of Metals.

Dr Mamta Bhushan Singh, from the Dept of Neurology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi has been working to improve Epilepsy care in India. She was awarded the Advocate status by the Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum (PALF) of the American Academy of Neurology in January 2008. This is a very prestigious award and Dr Mamta is the youngest of only 4 Indian neurologists to have achieved this honour so far.

As an advocate of the PALF, Dr Mamta Singh has continued to widen her efforts for increasing epilepsy awareness and improving treatment of patients suffering from epilepsy. She has been organizing epilepsy camps in the community every week, has taken epilepsy treatment to remote areas on the Lifeline Express being run by the Impact India foundation, has set up an epilepsy website to provide information and help to patients of epilepsy, conducts basic epilepsy management teaching sessions for general practitioners and has started regular epilepsy awareness and information dissemination programmes for school children in Delhi. Her efforts were recently recognized in the first issue of the PALF newsletter The Palatucci Connection.
